Shetland Hens

Shetland hens are a very rare landrace breed originating as their name suggest from the Shetland Isles. Shetlands are beautiful, yet hardy birds with tappits (caps on their head). Shetlands come in a variety of colours (all colours are acceptable in the breed) and they are quiet and inquisitive birds.

The vast majority of Shetland hens lay a beautiful green/blue egg (200 plus per year). We breed in colour groups so can send eggs from individual groups or a mix.

Shetland Ducks

Shetland ducks are a very rare breed. They are a hardy long lived breed and very good layers. They are black ducks (although their feathers often appear iridescent metallic green), with a white bib. Shetlands gain more white feathers as they age. Purebred Shetlands do not have white primaries (white primaries are a fault); any that do likely have some Black Swedish in their lineage.

Ducklings will hatch with black bills and feet. However, as they grow and mature only the females retain the black feet and bills. The drakes develop dark olive green bills, and their black feet and legs will develop a red/orange under-colour/tinge. Yellow patches on a Shetlands feet is a fault.
